She is cutting and editing a print of her feature length film, "Othello", sleeping on the studio floor some nights." The film's release was in part due to White's reluctance to label the film an "art" film. In White's biography in the promotion materials for the debut, it reads: " works out of her apartment in the Dunbar complex in Harlem and at the editing space she rents in the Screen Building on Broadway. The film did not screen until 1980, when it had its official debut at Howard University. White herself played Bianca and she enlisted her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Audrey Dixon, as Iago and Desdemona. The film was further delayed when Yaphet Kotto began his Hollywood movie career. Most involved with the project were students or maintained part- or full-time jobs during filming-even White worked as a stage dresser during production. With help from Charles Dorkins, White directed the film over the summers from 1962-1966. The entire cast and crew of the film are black. Shearer began the repository with a mission to create more roles for the black actors and more jobs for black theater technicians. White's Othello began as an acclaimed performance in 1960-1961 at Shearer Summer Theater, White's own repository company on Martha's Vineyeard, and in 1960 in Harlem. Approximate running time: 50 minutes each.Jim Williams as Brabantio Production May be done as a full length or each short play may be done independently as a one act. Shakespeare's controversial tragedy is deconstructed as the actors' politics, loves and friendships are put on the line. The atmosphere is charged as Georgia and Dave vigorously oppose this casting. Despite his lack of training, Wendy thinks Jimmy could do Othello in performance. But who will be cast as Othello? Jimmy, now married to the pregnant Georgia, has grown accustomed to working set crew and being a blocking stand-in for the lead. Dave is cast as Iago, Wendy as Desdemona, George as Emilia, and Lorraine as Bianca. Fresh from a hit production of Romeo and Juliet, New Vistas Theatre Company tackles Othello. Issues of race, class, gender and nontraditional casting emerge as the Bard brings out surprising fears, animosities, love and laughter in this company of players. Tempers flair and friendships are strained when Jimmy, Georgia's maintenance-man boyfriend, tries to prevent her from playing Juliet. Dave, the stage manager, is the company's founding member and a seasoned Shakespearean actor who has serious concerns about the production. The nurse is played by Lorraine, a feisty black friend of Georgia's who has a secret yen for Chris. Georgia plays opposite Chris, the white son of a New Vistas board member. Wendy, the determined white director, has cast her long-time black friend, Georgia, in the role of Juliet. In this play-within-a-play, the New Vistas Theatre Company sets out to put on Romeo and Juliet with its multiracial cast.
